Punjab National Bank website attacked by malware

Damages to customers' PCs have been done as hackers were able to penetrate PNB website.

The website of Punjab National Bank (PNB) was attacked by a malicious software (malware), causing damage to computers of many of the customers who clicked on a hyperlink at the bottom of the homepage (www.pnbindia.com) between 9 and 11 January.

Saumil Shah, CEO of IT security company Net-Square, said he had reported the incident on 9 January, when one of his employees opened the website to check the account his father holds with the bank. PNB removed the virus on 12 January after receiving Net-Square's notice.

"On opening the website, we found that at least 30 to 40 emails were sent randomly from the computer," said Shah. On checking the source code, they found a script which was responsible for the behavior.

He added that the site was under attack of the drive-by virus, which can get into the visitors computer through a website.
